As we get closer to the 2015 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, I’ll share short and sweet profiles of the inductees and some lesson ideas. Bookmark it.
Biography:
Blues-rock guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan formed the band in Texas and despite additions and subtractions at the other instruments, the band justifiably kept his Stratocaster as the focus. A performance in Switzerland (of all places) led the band to make connections in the music industry and soon they were known outside the Lone Star State.
His guitar playing was loud and loud and he carried the blues-rock mantle through the 1980s. Vaughan passed away at the age of 36 after a helicopter accident in 1990.
Listening:
“Love Struck Baby”
The opening of their first LP, the raw guitar playing, nasal singing, and frantic Blues chord progression are hallmarks of Vaughan’s style.
“Let’s Dance” by David Bowie
Vaughan co-wrote and played guitar on the hit for Bowie, who was one of the people the group met because of their performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland.
“Voodoo Child”
Use a live version of this Jimi Hendrix cover. The rocking guitar complements Vaughan’s singing voice so perfectly.
